How to Actually Clean Cloudy Shower Glass — And Why Your Usual Cleaner Isn’t Working

You clean the shower. You rinse the glass. You wipe it down. And somehow… it still looks cloudy.

If your shower screen has that hazy, dull finish that never seems to disappear, the problem usually isn’t that you’re not cleaning it enough. It’s that you may be trying to clean the wrong type of build-up with the wrong method.

Shower glass can collect a combination of soap scum, body oils and mineral deposits from water. Over time, those layers build up and leave glass looking permanently foggy, even straight after cleaning.

The good news? Once you know what you’re dealing with, it becomes a lot easier to get on top of.

First: Work Out What’s Actually on the Glass

Not all shower grime is the same.

Soap scum is usually a filmy or greasy residue caused by soap, shampoo, body products and oils sticking to the glass.

Mineral build-up comes from the minerals left behind when water droplets dry on the surface. Depending on your water supply, this can leave white marks, cloudy patches or stubborn spots that seem impossible to wipe away.

In many showers, you’ll have a combination of both.

That’s why simply spraying the glass and immediately wiping it often doesn’t make much difference.

Step 1: Start With a Proper Rinse

Before applying anything, rinse the shower screen with warm water.

This helps loosen surface grime and removes any shampoo, conditioner or product residue sitting on the glass.

If the shower hasn’t been cleaned properly in a while, don’t expect one quick wipe to remove months of build-up. You may need to repeat the process.

Step 2: Give the Product Time to Work

One of the biggest cleaning mistakes we see is spraying a product on and wiping it off immediately.

For heavier build-up, the cleaner needs some contact time.

Apply your chosen bathroom-safe cleaner according to its directions and allow it to sit for the recommended period before wiping or gently agitating the surface.

Avoid aggressive scrubbing pads or anything highly abrasive. Shower glass might feel tough, but abrasive cleaners and tools can scratch surfaces or damage coatings and nearby fittings.

Step 3: Don’t Forget the Corners and Edges

The centre of the glass usually gets all the attention, but the worst build-up can sit around:

• the bottom of the screen
• seals
• door edges
• hinges
• tracks
• corners where water collects

Use a soft cloth or suitable small cleaning brush for harder-to-reach areas.

This is also a good time to check silicone and grout around the shower for mould or discolouration.

Step 4: Rinse Thoroughly

Once the build-up has been loosened, rinse the glass thoroughly.

Leaving cleaning product behind can create another layer of residue — which is exactly what you’re trying to remove.

Use clean water and make sure there’s no remaining foam or film.

Step 5: Finish the Glass Properly

This is the step that makes the biggest difference to the final result.

Once the heavier bathroom build-up has been removed, use a dedicated glass cleaner for the finishing clean.

Use a clean, dry, lint-free cloth specifically for the final polish.

The Easiest Way to Stop Shower Glass Getting Cloudy Again

Unfortunately, there’s no magic product that means you’ll never have to clean your shower again.

But there is one habit that makes a huge difference:

Remove the water before it dries.

Keep a squeegee in the shower and quickly run it over the glass after the last shower of the day.

It takes less than a minute and reduces the amount of water — and therefore mineral residue — drying onto the glass.

Also try to:

• keep the bathroom well ventilated
• leave the shower door open after use where practical
• wipe down problem areas regularly
• clean light build-up before it becomes heavy build-up

A few minutes of maintenance each week is much easier than trying to remove months of stubborn residue later.
