Spring is finally here. The windows are opening, the washing is heading back outside and many of us are ready to give the house a much-needed refresh.
But if spring also brings sneezing, itchy eyes or a constantly stuffy nose, your carpets may deserve a little extra attention.
Carpet doesn’t just collect the dirt you can see. Dust, pollen, pet hair and other fine particles can settle deep within the fibres and may be disturbed again whenever someone walks through the room, the kids play on the floor or the dog races down the hallway.
The good news? A few simple changes can help you keep your carpets cleaner and your home feeling fresher this spring.
A quick run around with the vacuum may collect visible crumbs, but it won’t always remove the finer particles sitting deeper within the carpet.
For a more thorough clean, move the vacuum slowly and go over high-traffic areas in more than one direction. This gives the vacuum more time to lift dirt from between the fibres.
Pay particular attention to:
If your vacuum has a filter, clean or replace it as recommended by the manufacturer. A blocked filter can reduce suction and affect how efficiently your vacuum performs.
Spring means more time outside and more pollen, soil and grass making its way back inside.
A good-quality doormat at each entrance can help catch dirt before it reaches the carpet. For even better results, encourage everyone to remove their shoes at the door.
Pets can bring plenty inside too. Keep an old towel near the entrance to quickly wipe muddy paws and give long-haired pets a regular brush outdoors when possible.
It’s easy to vacuum the middle of a room and miss the places where dust quietly builds up.
Use your vacuum’s crevice attachment along skirting boards, under furniture and behind doors. If it’s safe to do so, move lighter pieces of furniture and clean underneath them.
Spring is also a good time to check beneath rugs. Dirt can work its way through the fibres and become trapped between the rug and the carpet below.
Warmer weather often means more entertaining, open doors and children moving between the backyard and the house. It can also mean more drink spills, dirty footprints and pet-related accidents.
The most important thing is to act quickly.
Blot the area using a clean, absorbent cloth and work from the outside of the spill towards the centre. Avoid scrubbing, as this can push the stain further into the carpet and damage the fibres.
Always check your carpet manufacturer’s care instructions before using a cleaning product, and test any product on a small, hidden area first. Using too much product—or soaking the carpet—can leave behind residue and make the area harder to clean.
Sprinkling heavily scented powders over the carpet might make a room smell fresher temporarily, but fragrance doesn’t remove the dirt causing the problem.
Some powders can also be difficult to vacuum out completely and may leave residue deep within the carpet or vacuum cleaner.
If a smell keeps returning, there may be something trapped below the surface that regular vacuuming cannot reach. Pet accidents, food spills and moisture can penetrate through the carpet fibres and into the underlay, which may require a deeper clean.
Not every part of your carpet gets used equally. Hallways, stairs and living rooms usually collect more dirt than spare bedrooms or formal areas.
Vacuum these busy zones more regularly and rotate rugs or furniture where practical to help reduce uneven wear. Addressing stains early can also prevent them from becoming more difficult to remove over time.
Even with regular vacuuming, carpets can hold onto embedded dirt that household equipment may not remove.
A professional carpet clean can help lift built-up grime, refresh tired-looking fibres and tackle stubborn stains more thoroughly. It can be especially worthwhile if you have pets, young children, a busy household or carpets that haven’t been professionally cleaned for some time.
Spring is a great opportunity to reset your home before the busier entertaining season begins.
