• Wet sanding with progressively finer sandpaper (usually starting around 800 grit, working up to 2000–3000)
• Polishing compound applied by hand or machine to restore clarity
• A UV sealant coat to protect the newly exposed surface

The catch: if the sealant step is skipped or done poorly, the lens re-oxidises within months — sometimes faster than before, because the protective layer has been sanded off. It’s also easy to sand unevenly or damage surrounding paintwork without the right technique.

For heavily oxidised lenses — where the plastic has started to crack or the haziness is coming from inside the lens — DIY kits won’t cut it and can sometimes make the surface harder to restore properly.

The Before and After Is Dramatic

Professionally restored headlights don’t just look better, the difference in light output is significant. A study from AAA found that heavily oxidised headlights can reduce illumination by up to 80% compared to a new lens. That’s the difference between seeing a hazard in time and not.
