Here’s something most drivers don’t think about: your headlights might only be operating at 20–30% of their original brightness — and you’d have no idea, because the dimming happens so gradually you adjust without noticing.
Winter is when it matters most. Shorter days, rain, fog, and low-sun glare mean you’re relying on your headlights more than any other time of year. If yours are yellowed, cloudy, or hazy, that’s not just an aesthetic problem — it’s a visibility and safety issue.
Almost all modern headlight lenses are made from polycarbonate plastic, not glass. Polycarbonate is lightweight and impact-resistant, but it oxidises over time when exposed to UV, heat, and the elements. That yellow or foggy film you see on older cars? That’s UV degradation eating through the protective coating on the lens surface.
It typically starts showing from around 3–5 years depending on where the car is parked (outdoor parking accelerates it significantly) and the quality of the original coating. Once the outer layer breaks down, road grime, moisture and exhaust residue embed themselves into the porous surface underneath.
There are DIY headlight restoration kits available at most auto stores, they work on a sanding and polishing principle and can make a genuine difference on moderately oxidised lenses.
The process typically involves:
The catch: if the sealant step is skipped or done poorly, the lens re-oxidises within months — sometimes faster than before, because the protective layer has been sanded off. It’s also easy to sand unevenly or damage surrounding paintwork without the right technique.
For heavily oxidised lenses — where the plastic has started to crack or the haziness is coming from inside the lens — DIY kits won’t cut it and can sometimes make the surface harder to restore properly.
Professionally restored headlights don’t just look better, the difference in light output is significant. A study from AAA found that heavily oxidised headlights can reduce illumination by up to 80% compared to a new lens. That’s the difference between seeing a hazard in time and not.
It’s also one of the most cost-effective cosmetic improvements you can make to a car. A set of headlights that look foggy and neglected ages a vehicle far more than people realise — a full restoration often makes a car look years younger.
In Australia, excessively degraded headlights can contribute to a failed roadworthy inspection. If your lenses are cracked or the degradation has affected light output significantly, it’s worth getting them assessed sooner rather than later, especially heading into the back half of winter.

If you live anywhere in Australia, you’re already familiar with how easily our carpets can stain. Dirt, grime, and foot traffic can fade colours and brightness over time, while spilled drinks, food crumbs, and cosmetics can make a huge mess of carpets and common areas. And thanks to kids, movers, pets or previous tenants, keeping […]
Summer is when carpets cop it the most. Between higher foot traffic, open doors, kids home from school, pets in and out, and extra humidity in the air, carpets quietly absorb far more than we realise. If you’ve ever thought “I’ll wait until winter” when it comes to steam cleaning, here’s why summer is actually the smarter […]
