Foggy Windows and Damp Carpets: The Two Winter Car Problems Everyone Has (and How to Fix Them)

Every winter, the same two things happen inside your car: the windscreen fogs up every single morning, and the floor turns into a swamp of wet shoes, dripping umbrellas and soggy school bags.

Both are fixable and neither takes more than ten minutes. Here’s how.

The fog problem (it’s not the weather, it’s your glass)

If you’re sitting in the driveway every morning waiting for the de-mister to do its thing, here’s something most people don’t know: fog clings to dirty glass.

Over time, a thin oily film builds up on the inside of your windscreen — it comes off the dash plastics, fingerprints and general cabin air. You can’t really see it, but fog grabs onto it like glue.

The fix: clean the inside of your windscreen with glass cleaner and a clean microfibre cloth (not the one you’ve used on the dash — that just moves the oils around). Do it once and you’ll notice the difference tomorrow morning: fog clears faster and forms less.

Bonus tip: when demisting, set your air con to fresh air, not recirculate. Recirculating just pushes the same humid air around the cabin in circles.

The damp floor problem (where that musty smell comes from)

Carpet floor mats are basically sponges. Every wet shoe and dripping brolly soaks straight in — and once moisture’s in there, it stays. Damp carpet is the number one cause of foggy windows overnight, that musty “wet dog” smell, and eventually mould.

The fix: swap to rubber or all-weather mats for winter so you can simply tip the water out. Sticking with carpet mats? Pull them out once a week and dry them properly indoors.

And make it a rule: wet things don’t live in the car. The umbrella, the swimming towel, the raincoat in the footwell — out the same day. Less moisture in, less fog and smell out.

When it’s gone past a quick fix

If the windows fog up even when the car’s been parked, the smell won’t budge, or you’ve spotted fuzzy patches on carpet or seatbelts — moisture has made it into the carpet underlay or seat foam, and no amount of airing out will fix that.

That’s where our local Jim’s Car Detailing teams come in — deep interior cleans, odour removal and mould treatment, done at your home over winter so you don’t even have to leave the house.
