You’ve noticed it. That faint damp, musty smell that turns up around June and just won’t shift. You’ve vacuumed. You’ve sprayed something lemony. You’ve opened a window for five minutes and hoped for the best. And it’s still there.
Here’s the thing: the problem isn’t on top of your carpet. It’s underneath. And no amount of surface spritzing is going to fix it.
Let’s get into what’s actually going on, because once you understand it, the smell suddenly makes a lot of sense.
Australian winters , especially down through Melbourne and the south-east — are cold and damp. That combination is the real culprit, and it works in three ways at once.
We close everything up. The windows stay shut, the heater runs, and ventilation drops right when indoor humidity is climbing. Drying clothes inside, longer hot showers, a houseful of people breathing, all of it puts moisture into the air. And that moisture has to go somewhere. Carpet fibres happen to be brilliant at holding onto it.
Condensation sinks down low. Warm indoor air meets cold floors, concrete slabs and tiles are the worst offenders — and moisture condenses right down at the carpet backing and underlay. That’s the layer you never see and never dry out. It just sits there, damp, all winter long.
Spills stop drying. In summer, a spilled cuppa or a pet accident dries out in a few hours. In winter, that same moisture lingers for days, soaking into the underlay where mould and bacteria are more than happy to set up shop.
Put those three together and you get the musty smell. It’s not coming from the carpet you can see — it’s mould and bacteria growing in the backing and underlay beneath it. Which is exactly why scrubbing the surface never works.
A musty carpet is annoying. But the stuff causing the smell is the part worth paying attention to.
Trapped moisture means mould spores in the air you’re breathing — and winter is precisely when everyone’s cooped up inside breathing it. For kids, asthma sufferers, and anyone with allergies, that’s a genuine issue, not just an unpleasant whiff.
Left long enough, that constant damp can also rot the underlay and damage the flooring underneath. And replacing flooring is a much bigger bill than keeping your carpet clean.
The good news: most of this is in your hands. A few habits make a real difference.
Air it out daily. Even ten minutes of cross-breeze in the morning clears a surprising amount of trapped moisture. Crack windows on opposite sides of the house and let it flush through.
Stop drying clothes on the carpet. That rack of damp washing in the lounge is dumping litres of moisture straight into the room. Dry outside when you can, or in a well-ventilated space — never on carpet.
Treat spills like they matter. In winter, don’t assume anything will dry on its own. Blot it (don’t rub — rubbing pushes it deeper), then dry the spot properly with a fan or a hairdryer on the cool setting.
Let your rugs breathe. Lift them off the carpet or hard floor every so often so both surfaces can dry out underneath.
Keep an eye on humidity. A cheap moisture gauge tells you what you’re dealing with. Aim to keep indoor humidity under 60%.
Here’s the honest truth: the habits above help you manage the problem, but they can’t reach what’s already settled deep in the underlay. Once mould and bacteria are in the backing, surface cleaning won’t touch them.
That’s where a proper professional clean comes in. Hot water extraction pulls the moisture, mould and bacteria out from deep in the fibres and backing — then extracts the water back out, so your carpet actually dries rather than getting wetter. That last part matters: a half-done job that leaves moisture behind makes the whole thing worse.
Heading into winter is the smart time to do it. Reset your carpets before months of closed-up, damp conditions set in, and you start the season clean instead of chasing a smell all the way to spring.
