The Mattress-Cleaning Mistake Almost Everyone Makes

Blotting a stain with a wet cloth feels like the obvious fix, but mattress fabric sits over a thick layer of foam or springs that soaks up whatever you pour on top, including the moisture from your cleaning. Scrub too hard or too wet, and the stain (and often the smell) doesn’t lift out, it just spreads further into the padding and resurfaces later.

What actually works:

  1. Blot, don’t rub — and always from the outside in. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper and spreads it sideways. Press a clean cloth straight down onto the stain and lift, working from the outer edge inward so you’re not dragging it into clean fabric.
  2. Use a baking soda sit before any liquid. Sprinkling a generous layer of baking soda over the area and leaving it for a few hours (or overnight) draws out moisture and odour before you introduce anything wet — this is the step most people skip straight past.
  3. Keep liquid to an absolute minimum. A small amount of mild detergent mixed with cold water, applied with a barely-damp cloth, is enough for most stains. Cold water specifically, hot water can set certain stains (like sweat or blood) permanently.
  4. Dry it properly before it goes back into use. A fan pointed at the mattress, or a few hours in direct sun if possible, stops any trapped moisture from turning into a mould problem underneath the surface — which is a much bigger job than the original stain.

If a stain fades but reappears a few days later, moisture wasn’t fully dried out and it’s wicking back up from the padding, not a sign the stain needs a harsher clean.

If a stain (or the mattress in general) needs more than a spot clean, our Jim’s Carpet Cleaning division steam cleans mattresses too, lifting stains, dust and odours from deep in the padding so it comes back feeling genuinely new. Call 131 546 or book online.

When was the last time you gave your dryer a proper clean? If the answer is “never” or “I’m not sure,” you’re not alone, but you could be putting your appliance (and energy bills) at risk. Over time, lint, dust and fabric residue can accumulate inside your dryer, leading to decreased efficiency, longer drying times […]

There’s nothing quite like a long, hot shower at the end of the day — but that steam and moisture can also create the perfect environment for mould to grow. Shower mould is one of those issues that creeps in slowly, but if you’ve spotted black patches around tiles, grout or the ceiling, it’s probably […]
