Why Your Blinds Still Look Dusty After You’ve Wiped Them Down

Running a cloth along each slat feels thorough, but it usually just moves dust from the top surface to the floor or presses it into a thin grey film along the edges you can’t quite reach with a flat wipe. Blinds collect dust on every angle of every slat, and a single swipe only ever catches one of them.

What actually works:

  1. Close the slats fully before you start, then reverse them halfway through. Wiping with the slats closed one way cleans the exposed surface; flipping them the other way exposes the side you missed. Doing both in one pass is what actually gets a slat properly clean, rather than half of it.
  2. Use the “sock” method for speed. An old sock (or microfibre glove) worn over your hand, lightly dampened with a vinegar-water mix, lets you clean both sides of a slat in one motion by pinching it between two fingers and sliding along the length. It’s dramatically faster than wiping one side at a time with a cloth.
  3. Take fabric or fine venetian blinds down for a proper soak. For blinds that haven’t been done in a long time, a bathtub with warm water and a little dish soap, left to soak for 20–30 minutes, lifts ingrained dust that a dry or damp wipe never will. Rinse and hang to dry before rehanging.
  4. Vacuum with a brush attachment first. Running a soft-bristle vacuum attachment over the blinds before wiping removes loose dust so you’re not just smearing it around with a damp cloth — this alone makes the wipe-down far more effective.

If your blinds look clean up close but grey or dull from across the room, it’s dust sitting on angles you didn’t reach, not a sign you need to wipe harder.

Blinds that haven’t been done in a while (or ones too fiddly to take down yourself) are exactly what our Jim’s Blind Cleaning & Repairs team handles every week: slats cleaned properly, repairs sorted if needed, no soaking your bathtub for an afternoon. Call 131 546 or book online.
