There’s nothing quite like a freshly washed car. But what if your regular weekend wash is actually doing more harm than good?
Those fine circular scratches you notice when the sunlight hits your paintwork? They’re often called swirl marks, and your washing technique could be contributing to them.
The good news is that most wash-related scratches are preventable. Here are five common mistakes our Jim’s Car Detailing experts recommend avoiding.
It might seem harmless, but using one sponge to clean everything from your roof to your wheels can cause problems.
As you wash, dirt, sand and tiny particles collect in your sponge. When you move that same sponge across your paintwork, those particles can create fine scratches.
Try this instead:
Expert tip: Work from the cleanest sections of your car towards the dirtiest, usually starting at the roof and finishing with the lower panels.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is going straight in with a sponge before rinsing off loose dirt.
Even when your car doesn’t look particularly dirty, its surface can be covered in dust, grit and road debris.
Dragging these particles across the paint creates friction and increases the risk of scratches.
Try this instead:
Give your car a thorough pre-rinse using a gentle stream of water before applying your car shampoo.
This removes much of the loose surface dirt and makes the washing process safer.
For particularly dirty vehicles, an appropriate automotive pre-wash product can help loosen stubborn grime before you make contact with the paint.
We’ve all heard someone say, “Just use a little dishwashing liquid. It does the same job.”
Unfortunately, household dishwashing detergents aren’t formulated specifically for automotive paint finishes.
Some can interfere with existing waxes or protective treatments, and they don’t necessarily provide the lubrication you want when washing your car.
Try this instead:
Choose a quality, pH-balanced car shampoo designed for automotive surfaces.
These products help lift dirt while providing lubrication between your wash mitt and the paintwork.
You wouldn’t use a rough towel to polish your sunglasses, so why use one on your car’s paintwork?
Old bath towels, dirty cloths and low-quality drying materials can drag grit across the surface or create unnecessary friction.
Even a freshly washed car can end up with fine marks if it’s dried incorrectly.
Try this instead:
Use a clean, plush microfibre drying towel designed for cars.
Gently blot or glide it across the surface without applying heavy pressure.
Make sure your towel is free from dirt and debris, and never place it on the ground between uses.
Bird droppings, insect residue and other contaminants can be frustrating to remove.
But scrubbing harder isn’t always the answer.
Aggressive rubbing, especially with abrasive sponges or brushes, can damage the clear coat and leave marks that won’t disappear with a regular wash.
Try this instead:
Use a suitable automotive cleaning product designed for the specific contamination.
Allow it to work according to the manufacturer’s instructions before gently removing the residue with a clean microfibre cloth.
If the mark won’t budge, avoid repeatedly scrubbing the same area.
Sometimes professional treatment is the safer option.
If you’ve noticed fine circular scratches, particularly when your car is parked in direct sunlight, don’t panic.
Many light swirl marks affect the clear coat rather than the underlying paint colour.
Depending on their severity, professional machine polishing or paint correction may improve or remove them.
However, it’s important to understand that polishing removes a small amount of clear coat, which is why proper assessment and technique matter.
Looking after your car’s paintwork doesn’t need to be complicated.
A few small changes to your washing routine can make a significant difference to how your vehicle looks over time.
And with warmer weather approaching, now is a great time to get those habits right.
