You’ve washed the car, rinsed off the dirt and stood back expecting that fresh, glossy finish… only to find cloudy marks and little white spots all over the paint and windows.
Those marks are usually water spots, and they’re one of the most frustrating car-cleaning problems because they can make a freshly washed vehicle look dirty again almost immediately.
The good news? With a few small changes to the way you wash and dry your car, they’re much easier to prevent.
Water spots are left behind when water droplets dry on the surface of your vehicle.
Tap water naturally contains minerals such as calcium and magnesium. When the water evaporates, those minerals can remain behind on the paintwork or glass, leaving visible marks.
It becomes an even bigger problem on warm or sunny days because the water dries much faster.
If mineral deposits are repeatedly left sitting on the paint, they can become harder to remove and may eventually affect the clear coat.
A sunny driveway might seem like the perfect place to wash the car, but it can actually make the job harder.
When the panels are hot, soap and water begin drying before you’ve had a chance to properly rinse and dry them.
Try this instead:
Wash your car early in the morning, later in the afternoon or in a shaded area where the panels stay cooler.
This is probably the biggest cause of water spots.
Even if the car looks clean after rinsing, every droplet that dries naturally has the potential to leave minerals behind.
Try this instead:
Dry the vehicle immediately after rinsing using a clean, soft microfibre drying towel.
Work from the roof down and gently absorb the water rather than aggressively rubbing the paint.
Mirrors, door handles, badges, grilles and trim can trap surprising amounts of water.
You finish drying the car, drive away and suddenly water runs back across your freshly cleaned panels.
Quick tip:
After drying, open the doors and boot and check around mirrors, handles and trims for hidden water.
Fresh water spots can sometimes be removed during a proper wash and dry.
Older mineral deposits can be more stubborn and may require professional products or paint correction depending on how long they’ve been sitting on the surface.
One thing we don’t recommend is aggressively scrubbing the marks. This can introduce scratches or swirl marks into the paint.
If regular washing isn’t removing them, it may be time for a professional detail.
