The Window Furnishing Everyone Forgets (Until It’s Too Late)

You vacuum the floors. You wipe the benches. You even remembered to hit the skirting boards last month.

But when was the last time you actually cleaned your blinds?

Blinds and curtains are one of the biggest dust and allergen traps in any home or workplace — and one of the most overlooked. Every slat, fold and track collects a fine layer of dust, pollen and grime that gets stirred back into the air every time you open or close them. With spring in full swing and pollen counts climbing, now’s the perfect time to sort them out.

Here’s how to do it properly, whichever type you’ve got.

Venetian and Aluminium Blinds

These are dust magnets thanks to all those horizontal surfaces.

  • The sock trick: Pop an old cotton sock over your hand, dip your fingers in a mix of water and a splash of white vinegar, and run each slat between your fingers. It picks up dust in one pass and leaves a light streak-free shine.
  • Close them before you start: Close the slats fully in one direction, dust that side, then flip and do the other. You’ll cover twice the surface with half the missed spots.
  • For a deeper clean: Take them down (or leave them hanging if wall-mounted) and wipe with a microfibre cloth dampened in warm soapy water. Dry thoroughly before closing to avoid water marks.

Roller Blinds

  • Vacuum first, always: Use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum and go top to bottom in one direction to avoid pushing dust into the fabric weave.
  • Spot clean, don’t soak: Roller blind fabric is often treated or laminated, so a barely-damp cloth with mild detergent is enough for marks. Soaking can cause warping or peeling.
  • Roll it up before cleaning: Cleaning a fully extended blind means you’re working against gravity and drips. Roll it up a little as you go so you’re always cleaning a manageable section.

Fabric Curtains and Drapes

  • Check the care label before anything else: Some are machine washable, others are dry-clean only, and getting it wrong can shrink or distort the fabric.
  • Give them a shake outside first: A good shake-out before washing removes surface dust and means your washing machine isn’t doing all the work.
  • Steam instead of iron for wrinkles: A handheld steamer while curtains are still hanging saves you the hassle of taking them down and re-hanging, and it’s gentler on delicate fabrics.

The Bit Everyone Skips: Tracks and Mechanisms

Whether it’s a blind’s headrail or a curtain track, this is where grime builds up fastest and function starts to suffer.

  • Wipe the track with a dry microfibre cloth first to remove loose dust before it turns into grimy paste with any moisture.
  • For sticky or slow-moving mechanisms, a small amount of silicone spray (not oil-based lubricant, which attracts more dust) keeps things gliding smoothly.
  • In office settings, don’t forget the pulley cords and wands — they’re handled constantly and are one of the germiest spots in the room.

Why It’s Worth the Effort

Beyond the obvious appearance factor, clean blinds and curtains genuinely improve indoor air quality — especially valuable during spring allergy season. They also tend to last longer once you’re not grinding dust and grit into the fabric or mechanism every time you open them.
