Why Your Car’s Interior Needs More Love Than Its Paint

Most people think “detailing” and picture a shiny exterior. But here’s the thing, you don’t sit on the outside of your car. You sit inside it, every day, breathing its air and touching its surfaces. And after a long winter of muddy shoes, damp jackets, and closed windows, your car’s interior is usually in worse shape than its paintwork.

With spring here, it’s the perfect time to give the inside of your car the attention it’s been missing. Here’s how to do it properly.

1. Start With the Air, Not the Surfaces

Before you wipe a single panel, deal with what you can’t see: the cabin air filter. Most drivers don’t even know their car has one, but it’s been quietly filtering everything you breathe for months — pollen, dust, mould spores from winter humidity. If it hasn’t been changed in over a year, that “musty car smell” you can’t quite place is probably coming from there, not your carpets.

Tip: Check your owner’s manual for the cabin filter location, on most cars it’s tucked behind the glovebox and takes five minutes to swap.

2. Vacuum in the Right Order

A lot of people vacuum their car back to front. Flip it:

• Roof lining and pillars first — dust falls downward, so you want gravity working with you, not against you.
• Seats next, working the crevices where crumbs and coins hide.
• Floor and mats last, once everything above has already fallen onto them.

Use a narrow crevice attachment for seat tracks and between the console and seat, this is where debris accumulates for years and quietly wears down mechanisms.

3. Treat Leather and Fabric Differently — Don’t Use the Same Product on Both

This trips up a lot of DIY detailers. Fabric seats need a gentle upholstery cleaner and a soft brush to lift stains without soaking the padding underneath (a soaked seat foam takes days to dry and can develop odour). Leather seats need a dedicated leather cleaner followed by a conditioner, skipping the conditioner is how leather cracks prematurely, especially with Australian sun exposure.

Rule of thumb: if you wouldn’t put it on your hands, don’t put it on leather.

4. The Dashboard Is Doing Battle With UV Every Day

Your dashboard cops more direct sun exposure than almost any other surface in daily life. Over time, UV breaks down plastic and vinyl, leading to fading, that dull chalky look, and eventually cracking. A UV-protectant (not a greasy “shine” spray — those actually attract more dust and can cause glare on your windscreen) applied every month or two is one of the cheapest ways to extend your interior’s lifespan.

5. Don’t Ignore the Smell, Find the Source, Don’t Mask It

Air fresheners cover odour; they don’t remove it. If there’s a persistent smell, it’s usually one of three things:

• Moisture trapped in carpet or floor mats (common after wet winter months)
• Food residue in seat crevices or cup holders
• A cabin filter overdue for replacement (see point 1)

Fixing the source takes a little longer than spraying an air freshener, but it’s the difference between a car that smells clean and one that smells like it’s trying to hide something.

6. Glass Needs a Different Cloth Than Everything Else

Using the same microfibre cloth on your dash and then your windows is a common mistake — it transfers oils from interior protectants straight onto the glass, causing streaking and glare (a real issue driving into low spring sun). Keep one cloth strictly for glass, always.
