Mouldy Blinds This Winter? Here’s Why It Happens (and How to Fix It)

If you’ve noticed dark spots creeping across your blinds this winter, you’re not imagining it — and you’re definitely not alone. Cooler months bring closed windows, less airflow, and more condensation on glass, and your blinds are usually the first thing to catch it. Left untreated, mould doesn’t just look bad — it can stain fabric and vinyl permanently and even affect indoor air quality.

Here’s why it happens and how to deal with it before it gets worse.

Why blinds get mouldy in winter

The issue: Condensation builds up on cold windows overnight, especially in bathrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms with less ventilation. Blinds sit right against that moisture and rarely get the chance to dry out fully before it happens again the next night.

Why it matters:

  • Mould spreads fast once it takes hold, especially on fabric and timber blinds
  • It’s not just cosmetic — mould spores can affect indoor air quality
  • The longer it sits, the harder (and more expensive) it is to remove

How to fix mould that’s already there

The tip:

  • Wipe timber, aluminium, or vinyl blinds with a mix of warm water and a mild detergent — avoid bleach on timber, as it can damage the finish
  • For fabric or roller blinds, a soft brush attachment with light suction removes surface mould before wiping
  • Always dry the blinds fully afterwards — leaving them damp only invites the mould straight back
  • Stubborn or set-in mould, particularly on fabric, often needs a professional clean rather than a DIY fix

How to stop it coming back

The tip:

  • Crack a window or use an exhaust fan after showers and cooking to cut down on moisture
  • Wipe down condensation on window glass each morning before it has a chance to spread to the blinds
  • Leave blinds open slightly during the day to let air circulate behind them
  • In rooms that stay damp no matter what (like bathrooms), consider a dehumidifier through winter

A bit of winter condensation is normal, but mouldy blinds don’t have to be. Staying on top of moisture and giving your blinds a proper clean every so often will keep them looking fresh and stop small spots turning into a bigger problem.
