If your driveway, path, or alfresco area has picked up a green or black tinge over the last couple of months, you’re not imagining it. Winter is peak season for moss and mould buildup and by early August, it’s usually at its worst. Here’s why it happens, and why now is the right time to deal with it.
Moss and mould need two things to thrive: moisture and shade. Winter delivers both — more rain, less direct sun, and surfaces that stay damp for longer between drying out. Shaded side paths, south-facing driveways, and areas under eaves or trees are usually the worst affected, since they get the least sun exposure to dry things out naturally.
A mossy path isn’t only about appearance. Once moss and mould take hold, surfaces become noticeably more slippery a real trip hazard, especially on sloped driveways or steps. Left long enough, it can also work its way into grout lines and porous surfaces like unsealed concrete or sandstone, making it harder to remove and more likely to return.
It’s tempting to assume warmer weather will dry everything out and solve the problem on its own. Sun does help slow regrowth, but it won’t remove what’s already embedded in the surface. Without an actual clean, moss and mould typically just go dormant — and come straight back the following winter, often heavier than before.
Getting driveways and outdoor areas properly cleaned in late winter means:
If you want to tackle light moss and grime yourself before booking a proper clean, a few tips:
These will help keep on top of light buildup, but they won’t shift moss and mould that’s already embedded, that’s where a professional clean makes the difference, especially on larger areas or surfaces that need the right pressure and technique to avoid damage.
