The Spring Clean-Up Most People Leave Too Late (And How to Get Ahead of It)

Spring is only a few weeks away, and it always sneaks up faster than expected. One week it’s still cold mornings the next, everything’s on show again: driveways, windows, cars, carpets, all of it, right when you least have time to deal with it.

The good news is that most of what makes a property or vehicle look “tired” after winter comes down to a handful of predictable problem areas. Here’s what to look out for, and how to get ahead of it before spring turns “I’ll get to it” into “why does everything need doing at once.”

1. Windows carry more grime than you’d think

Winter is tough on glass — more rain means more residue, and less sun means less natural drying and evaporation, so dirt and water spots build up gradually without anyone noticing day to day. It’s usually only once the sun’s back out in full that streaky, grimy windows become obvious. A proper clean now (inside, outside, and tracks) means you’re not squinting through winter buildup once spring light hits.

DIY tip: Clean windows on an overcast day or in early morning/late afternoon shade direct sun dries the solution too fast and leaves streaks. A microfibre cloth for the final pass makes a bigger difference than the cleaning product itself.

2. Driveways and paths pick up more than dirt

Moss and mould thrive in exactly the conditions winter provides moisture and shade. By this point in the season, driveways, paths, and shaded outdoor areas are usually at their dirtiest, and often more slippery than people realise until someone nearly loses their footing on a damp morning. It’s a genuine safety issue as much as a cosmetic one, and one of the easiest things to get sorted before warmer weather (and more foot traffic) arrives.

DIY tip: For light moss between pavers, a stiff broom with a vinegar-and-water mix works well without forcing water further into the joins. Sweep away loose debris first so it doesn’t turn to mush once wet.

3. Carpets hold onto a whole season of use

Closed windows, more time spent indoors, and muddy shoes add up. Carpets accumulate dust, allergens, and grime over winter in a way that’s easy to overlook because it happens gradually. 4. Cars take a beating from winter roads

Between road grime, salt residue, rain spotting, and less frequent washing in the cold, most cars are carrying months of buildup by this point both outside and in, if it’s been a while since the interior’s been done. A proper detail before spring isn’t just cosmetic; it also helps protect paintwork from residue that can etch in over time if left too long.

DIY tip: Rinse the car before washing to lift loose grit off the surface washing straight over dirt is one of the most common causes of fine scratches in paintwork. Two buckets (one for soap, one for rinsing your wash mitt) keeps dirt from being reapplied to the panel.
