Slippery Outdoor Pavers? Here’s How to Get Your Patio Summer-Ready

The warmer weather is here, the BBQ is getting more use, and outdoor entertaining season is officially back.

But before you pull out the outdoor furniture and invite everyone over, there’s one area of your home worth checking: your outdoor paving.

After months of rain, moisture and limited sunlight, patios, pathways and driveways can develop slippery patches that aren’t always obvious at first glance.

The good news? With the right approach, you can tackle many common paving problems yourself and help keep your outdoor spaces looking their best throughout summer.

Here’s what the Window & Pressure Cleaning experts at Jim’s Cleaning Group recommend.

1. Look out for green or dark patches

Ever noticed a greenish coating on your pavers, particularly in shaded areas?

That’s often algae or moss, which thrive in damp environments. These growths can make surfaces slippery, especially after rain or when wet.

What you can do:

Start by inspecting areas that receive very little sunlight, particularly around garden beds, underneath outdoor furniture and along pathways.

For surfaces suitable for manual cleaning, remove loose debris and use a soft or medium-bristle brush with a manufacturer-approved outdoor cleaning solution.

Always follow the product instructions and test a small, inconspicuous section first.

Avoid scrubbing aggressively on delicate natural stone, coated surfaces or loose paving.

Jim’s tip: Don’t just clean the visible green patch. Check surrounding shaded areas too, as moisture and organic debris can create the same conditions nearby.

2. Stop leaves and dirt from building up

It sounds simple, but one of the easiest ways to maintain outdoor paving is to keep it clear of leaves, soil and garden debris.

When leaves sit on damp pavers, they trap moisture against the surface. Combined with shade, this can create favourable conditions for algae and moss.

What you can do:

  • Sweep outdoor pathways and patios regularly.
  • Remove leaves collecting behind pots and outdoor furniture.
  • Keep garden beds and mulch from spilling across pathways.
  • Move lightweight outdoor furniture occasionally to clean underneath.

A quick sweep each week can help prevent the kind of build-up that becomes a bigger cleaning job later.

3. Check where water is collecting

If the same section of your patio stays damp long after the rest has dried, it’s worth investigating.

Poor drainage, blocked surface drains and low spots can allow water to sit on paving, encouraging slippery growth.

What you can do:

After the next rainfall, take a walk around your outdoor area and look for spots where water pools.

Clear leaves and accessible debris from surface drains and drainage channels.

If water continues to collect in the same area, consider having the drainage or paving levels assessed.

Cleaning the surface may improve its appearance, but fixing the underlying moisture problem is what helps prevent the issue from returning.

4. Be careful with pressure washers

Pressure washing can be an effective way to clean suitable outdoor surfaces, but it’s not a one-setting-fits-all solution.

Using excessive pressure or the wrong attachment can damage certain pavers, remove protective coatings or dislodge jointing sand.

What you can do:

Before using a pressure washer, check the paving manufacturer’s recommendations and the equipment instructions.

If the surface is suitable, start with the gentlest recommended setting and test an inconspicuous area before continuing.

Avoid directing high-pressure water into joints, cracks, electrical fittings or damaged surfaces.

For delicate stone, older paving or heavily stained areas, professional advice is often the better option.

Important: Never pressure wash asbestos-containing materials. If you suspect a surface contains asbestos, stop and seek qualified advice.

5. Keep your outdoor areas cleaner for longer

Once you’ve removed the build-up, a little regular maintenance can make all the difference.

Set aside a few minutes every fortnight to inspect your patio, driveway and walkways.

Pay particular attention to high-traffic areas, spots that remain damp and surfaces regularly exposed to garden irrigation.

It’s also worth checking whether your pavers would benefit from an appropriate protective sealer. Not all paving requires sealing, so seek advice based on the surface material before applying one.

Your pre-summer outdoor checklist

Before your next BBQ or family get-together, give your outdoor areas a quick once-over:

  • Sweep away leaves, dirt and garden debris.
  • Check shaded paving for moss or algae.
  • Clear accessible outdoor drains.
  • Look for areas where water is pooling.
  • Check for loose, uneven or damaged pavers.
  • Clean outdoor surfaces using methods suitable for their materials.

A little attention now can save time on cleaning later and help make your outdoor entertaining areas safer and more inviting.

A cleaner outdoor space starts with the right approach

Outdoor paving is exposed to everything from rain and garden debris to everyday foot traffic, so regular maintenance is essential.

While routine sweeping and gentle cleaning can help manage minor build-up, stubborn stains, widespread algae and large outdoor areas may need professional attention.

At Jim’s Window & Pressure Cleaning, our teams can help assess suitable cleaning methods for your outdoor surfaces, taking the hassle out of getting your property ready for the entertaining season.

Because summer weekends are better spent enjoying your outdoor space, not scrubbing it.
