You vacuum the floor mats and wipe the dash, then call it done. But most of the grime, allergens, and odour-causing buildup in a car interior lives in the spots that never make the list. With spring road trips and AFL finals traffic picking up, here’s where to actually look.
1. Door pockets and cup holders These trap crumbs, spilled coffee, and dust into a sticky residue that just sits there. Empty them completely, vacuum with a narrow nozzle attachment, then wipe with a damp microfibre cloth. For cup holders, a cotton bud dipped in soapy water gets into the ridges vacuums can’t reach.2. Air conditioning vents Vents pull in dust, pollen and mould spores and then blow them straight at your face — a big deal during spring hay fever season. A soft-bristled paintbrush or an old toothbrush loosens dust from the slats; follow with a vacuum on low suction. If there’s a musty smell when the AC kicks in, that’s usually the cabin air filter overdue for a change.3. Seat crevices and seatbelt buckles Crumbs, coins and dust funnel into the gap between seat and console and rarely get touched. A slim crevice tool or even a butter knife wrapped in a microfibre cloth works well. Seatbelt buckles get surprisingly grimy from hand contact — wipe with an antibacterial wipe rather than spraying cleaner directly into the mechanism.4. Boot and cargo area Between shoes, sports gear and shopping bags, boots collect sand, dirt and the odd stray french fry. Remove everything, vacuum thoroughly (including under any false floor), and check for water ingress around the boot seal now that spring rain is picking up.5. Interior glass film Every car develops a faint, oily haze on the inside of the windscreen and windows from off-gassing plastics and skin contact — most people never notice until they drive into low sun and can barely see.
