Summer Windows & Blinds: the clean most people skip (and then wonder why the house feels dusty)

In an Australian summer, we see the same thing in homes and businesses over and over. Everything looks “okay”… but the place still feels dusty, sticky, and a bit stale.

A lot of the time, it comes down to windows, blinds and tracks.

  • Doors are open more often
  • Fans and air con are running
  • Wind blows dust and pollen straight inside
  • Sliding door tracks collect grime like a gutter

If you want a noticeable difference fast, this is one of the highest-impact cleans you can do.

What builds up in summer (and where it hides)

1) Window tracks (the worst offender)

Tracks fill up with dust, sand, dead insects and gritty build-up.
Once it’s in there, every time you open the door it spreads around.

2) Blinds (dust magnets)

Blinds cop it from both sides, indoor dust + outdoor air.
When the fan hits them, that dust moves straight back into the room.

3) Flyscreens

Clogged screens reduce airflow. You lose the breeze and everything feels warmer and stuffier.

4) Glass and frames

Fingerprints, cooking film, coastal salt and general grime show up more in summer light.

The Jim’s way to clean windows, blinds and tracks (without turning it into a weekend job)

What you need

  • Vacuum with brush attachment (or a handheld vac)
  • 2–3 microfibre cloths
  • Warm water and a small amount of dishwashing liquid
  • An old toothbrush or small detailing brush
  • A bucket or spray bottle
  • Optional: squeegee

Step 1: Start with the screens (5 minutes)

If you clean glass first, you’ll be back there again.

What to do:

  • Vacuum the screen with the brush attachment
  • If it’s sticky or grimy, wipe with a damp cloth (warm soapy water), then dry

Where to focus: sliding doors and bedrooms, that’s where airflow matters most.

Step 2: Do the tracks properly (this is the difference-maker)

This is where most people wipe the top and call it done. It needs a proper clean.

Best method:

  1. Vacuum the track thoroughly (get the corners)
  2. Lightly spray or wipe with warm soapy water
  3. Use a toothbrush/detail brush to loosen the packed dirt
  4. Wipe out with a cloth
    • Tip: wrap the cloth around a butter knife to get into tight corners

If the track is gritty: keep going until you stop hearing that crunch when the door slides.

Step 3: Blinds (quick, but do it the right way)

Roller blinds

  • Vacuum gently with the brush attachment
  • Spot clean marks with a damp cloth
  • Don’t soak them (you can damage the backing)

Venetian/slatted blinds

  • Close them and vacuum
  • Wipe with a slightly damp microfibre
  • Flip and repeat

Pro tip: bedroom blinds make the biggest difference to comfort — less dust in the air while you sleep.

Step 4: Glass and frames (avoid the streak trap)

In summer, glass streaks because products dry too fast in heat.

What works:

  • Warm water + a tiny amount of dishwashing liquid
  • Microfibre to wash
  • Dry cloth or squeegee to finish

What to avoid: strong sprays in direct sun — they’ll streak every time.

Quick maintenance so it stays clean (and doesn’t become a big job)

You don’t need to deep clean every month. Just keep the worst areas under control.

Weekly (5 minutes)

  • Vacuum the tracks on your main sliding door
  • Wipe handles + the lower half of the glass (fingerprint zone)

Monthly (20 minutes per room)

  • Screens → tracks → blinds → glass in one room
    Rotate through the house.

This is how cleaners keep places looking and feeling clean without spending their lives cleaning.

When it’s time to get help

Call a professional when:

  • tracks are packed and you can’t shift the gritty build-up
  • you’ve got mould-like spotting in corners
  • windows are high or hard to reach
  • blinds need more than a surface dust (without damage)

A proper reset makes maintenance easy again.

If you only do one thing today…

Vacuum the tracks on your main sliding door. It takes two minutes, and you’ll feel the difference immediately.

Jim’s Cleaning tip: Start where you get the most traffic, sliding doors, front entry windows, and bedrooms. That’s where clean makes the biggest impact in summer.
