How To: Decluttering

Ever go to clean the house and notice that you’re quite literally getting nowhere? Instead of going straight to wiping down benches and cleaning bathrooms, you are tidying spaces, putting things away, and preparing your space to be cleaned. If you’re noticing this to be a regular theme in your home, you may benefit from decluttering your spaces.

Decluttering is more than just tidying up your space. It is a process that involves intentionally removing excess items from your home or workspace. The art of decluttering is about creating a physical and mental environment that supports productivity, creativity, and wellbeing. Here are some tips to help you master the art of decluttering:

1. Start small

Begin with one area of your home or workspace. It could be a drawer, a closet, or even a single shelf. Starting small helps you avoid feeling overwhelmed and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

2. Evaluate each item

As you declutter, ask yourself whether each item serves a purpose in your life. If it doesn’t, consider donating it, throwing it away, or selling it. Be honest with yourself and resist the urge to hold onto items that are no longer useful or meaningful.

3. Categorize items

Group similar items together. This can help you see how much of each type of item you have and determine whether you need to keep everything or not.

4. Create designated spaces

Once you have sorted your items, create a specific place for each category. This will help you maintain order and make it easier to find what you need when you need it.

5. Maintain the habit

Decluttering is an ongoing process. Make it a habit to regularly review and evaluate your belongings. Consider doing a big decluttering once or twice a year, and smaller decluttering sessions on a more regular basis.

6. Be mindful of your purchases

As you declutter, you may realize that you have accumulated a lot of things that you don’t need. Going forward, be mindful of what you bring into your space. Ask yourself whether you really need something before you buy it, and consider whether it will add value to your life.

Decluttering is an art form that takes practice and intention. By taking small steps and being mindful of your possessions, you can create a space that supports your goals and promotes wellbeing. So, go ahead and declutter – your mind and body will thank you!
