Red Wine Stains

The dreaded red wine stain… We all know it and we all fear it.

Every carpeted household knows over time their carpets will encounter the odd spill or two – some worse than others. None however, worse than the red wine spill.
Due to its highly acidic nature, thick texture and dark colouration a spill (especially on light carpets) can be almost impossible to extract from your carpet.

Now no one is saying don’t enjoy a glass or two (or three or four…) but here at Jim’s we know a few tips and tricks to help minimise the effects of the inevitable red wine spill:
*Note these tips are for how to treat immediate wine spills not old dried out stains. Red wine spills can be very tedious to remove and for the best results you must action the spill immediately.

Technique 1

  • As soon as the wine is spilt, create a thick layer of paper towel and blot up the excess liquid.
  • Mix 1 table spoon of white vinegar to 500ml water and apply to stained area (being careful not to spread the stain). Continue to blot with a clean cloth/sponge/paper towel etc…
  • Repeat the last step until you are happy with the result.

Technique 2

  • As soon as possible poor white wine over the red wine spill (the white wine helps neutralise the red wine which will help remove it).
  • Blot up the excess liquid with a clean cloth/sponge/paper towel etc…
  • Once you have extracted as much liquid as you can pour ¼ inch of salt over the spill. If the salt is wet or moist, pour more on – The more the better.
  • Leave salt until dry – it’s a good idea to keep on overnight.
  • Remove as much salt as possible before vacuuming.

There were worm’s, trojan horses, cuckoo’s eggs, and all manner of other clever ideas to cause […]
